Formatting an XML document is likely to cause a lot of changes though out the file. For a large file this would mean that it would consume a huge amount of memory.

In order to prevent this when you format a document the Large File Editor prompts you for the filename to save the formatted XML to. In this way the memory footprint is kept very small.

The XML document must be well formed in order to be formatted.
